Guwahati: Guwahati city on Tuesday, July 14, registered yet another massive spike in the number of COVID-19 cases as 627 more patients tested positive for the dreaded contagion. With the dramatic surge in the number of cases in Guwahati, the number of COVID-19 infections in Assam is nearing the 20,000-mark (the current tally is 18,666).

The number of cases on Tuesday is indeed alarming -- especially considering the fact Assam registered 859 cases in total (meaning "only" 232 cases were detected across the rest of Assam on the same day).

Despite the extension of the lockdown that has been called to contain the spread of the viral disease, Guwahati's COVID-19 positive cases have continued to spike upwards at a steady and alarming rate. Yesterday also, the city saw a major uptick in COVID-19 cases as 513 cases were registered within a timeframe of 24 hours.

With the addition of these fresh cases, the total number of COVID-19 patients detected so far in the state has now reached 18,666. Although the number of recoveries has also been rising at a fast rate (12,173 patients have been discharged), leaving only 6,444 cases "active", the rising death toll has also caused enough reason for alarm.

The newly formed Death Audit Board that ascertains whether the cause of death is actually COVID-19 yesterday confirmed as many as 6 deaths due to the viral disease. "We lost Ms. Sneha Mall (36), Sri Litu Kumar Bora (37), Sri Sarat Ch Saharia (60), Sri Upendra Nath (62), Sri Pramod Ranjan Saha (73) & Sri Subhakaran Dudheria (73) today. They succumbed to #COVID19 as per the Death Audit Board report. My prayers, and condolences to the families", Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote in a tweet, condoling the demise of the patients.
