Guwahati: Guwahati – the new epicentre of COVID-19 in Assam – registered 598 more cases on Monday, July 6. On Monday, 786 more virus cases in Assam, out of which 598 cases were registered in Guwahati alone. With the detection of these fresh cases, the total number of cases in Assam has reached 12,522, out of which 4,623 cases are active. The number of casualties remains 14.

"Alert ~ 786 new cases detected in Assam today, with 598 cases from Guwahati City alone. Please follow #SocialDistancing, wear #mask & maintain hygiene", Assam's health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma appealed in a tweet.

A day earlier, the city had registered 552 COVID-19 cases, pushing the total number of cases past the 11,000-case mark. Meanwhile, the Assam state health department has conducted close to 5 lakh tests after the pandemic landed on Indian shores. After a significant push towards ramping up the testing infrastructure, the Government is nearing the 5 lakh test mark.

"We are fast moving towards the 5 lakh testing mark. Our testing figures reached 471,221 today. Together we have to win this battle and targeted tracking and testing form the core of our strategy. Do support our incredibly committed teams, out day and night for testing", Biswa Sarma wrote in a tweet.

In Assam, the total number of tests conducted, as on July 6 stood at 4,71,221. The highest number of tests have been conducted at the hilltop lab of the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). 1,18,013 tests have also been outsourced. Recently, Union Minister Amit Shah, expressing over the significant rise in the number of cases in Guwahati city, had urged the State Government to conduct as many as 10,000 tests in the urban area. The State Government has sought to boost its testing capability by procuring 2 lakh rapid antigen testing kits, out of which 1 lakh have been earmarked for use in Guwahati city.
