Assam: Lona Sonowal Bags Silver In Weightlifting at National School Sports Festival
Assam: Lona Sonowal, of Dhemaji,Assam Wins Silver Medal in Weightlifting (45 kg category) at the 66th National School Sports Festival (Under 19) in New Delhi.
GUWAHATI: On 66th National School Sports Festival (Under 19) in New Delhi, Lona Sonowal, a class IX student of Batgharia Higher Secondary School in Dhemaji, won the silver medal in weightlifting (45 kg category).
Taking on twitter, Education minister Ranoj Pegu informed that, “Heartiest congratulations to Lona Sonowal, a class IX student of Batgharia Higher Secondary School in Dhemaji for winning the silver medal🥈at Weightlifting (45 kg category) at the 66th National School Sports Festival (Under 19) in New Delhi today.
Kudos to coaches Shri Anup Konwar, Shri Shantanu Gogoi & Smt. Parbati Tamang for this stupendous performance.”
However, Tuesday saw complaints from young athletes who have arrived in Delhi for the 66th National School Games regarding the lack of basic services at Sarvodaya Vidyalaya, Patparganj, where they are now lodging.
The athletes' main point of contention was the lack of mattresses at the lodging facility, which left them with little choice but to sleep on the ground. They also expressed dissatisfaction with the Sarvodaya Vidyalaya's meal service.
Recently in Bhopal and Gwalior, 3,476 competitors from various states came to compete for medals in the multi-sport national school games. Inder Singh Parmar, the minister of education, and Yashodhara Raje Scindia, the minister of sports and youth development, inaugurated 66th National School Games on Wednesday at Bhopal's Tatya Tope Stadium.
Amarjit Sharma, the general secretary of the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), and Mukhtej Singh Badesha, the vice president, was also present at the inaugural ceremony.
From June 6 to June 9 in Bhopal, around 1750 players comepeting in athletic and boxing matches as part of the national multi-disciplinary event. From June 8 to June 12 in Gwalior, there will be games of badminton and hockey involving over 1100 players. From June 10 to June 13 in Bhopal, there will be approximately 2376 athletes taking part in football, volleyball, judo, and table tennis matches.
On the other hand, in February, Panchami Sonowal, from the Dhemaji district, Assam, won the gold medal in the 49 kg weightlifting division at the Khelo India Youth Games in Madhya Pradesh. It is one of Assam's most underdeveloped regions. Panchami's father manages a dhaba in Dhemaji, and her brother drives an automobile to help the family boost its income.
